Who am I?

11059372_894047197285413_6471024034300676650_nI’m an American/Dutch expat who moved to Belgium for love. I’ve been vegan since 2010, and started commuting to Belgium (from Amsterdam) around the same time, emigrating in 2013. I’m always on the lookout for vegan products in the supermarket, health food stores, vegan specialty stores, pretty much everywhere I go. I created this blog to share what I’ve found with other vegans in Belgium, whether you’re new to Belgium, new to veganism, or an old hand looking for new ideas.

Who I’m not: I’m not a health food vegan. I’m not afraid of sugar, soy, gluten, or carrageenan. As long as it’s free from animal products, I’m happy to try it!

When I’m not scrutinizing ingredient lists, you can find me selling books, watching nature documentaries with Mr. Vegan Stuff in Belgium, enjoying the birds that visit our yard, or playing with the kitty.

(A note on language: I’ll be writing in English, but because I’m living in Flanders, I’m more likely than not to use the Dutch names of products.)

    Hallo 🙂
Ik ben al enkele maanden vegetariër en op weg naar een vegan lifestyle. In een kleine stad in België vegan zijn is toch wat moeilijker dan ergens anders en jouw blog is dan ook erg hulpzaam en gewoonweg geweldig! Dankje!

      Hi Karin,
Thank you so much for your incredibly sweet comment!! I also live in a small town and the challenge of finding easy, accessible vegan products was one of the reasons for starting this blog. I’m so happy to be able to help other people find things that make it easier to go vegan! 😀

Thanks for the good work! Some products I didn’t even think of looking at the ingredients, because I was sure of what to expect.. Well I was wrong, and thanks to you!
I also have a blog about veganism in belgium (more about fashion and eating out, ethics but also about arts in general 🙂 ) I would be super happy to link your blog in my articles, as it would help a lot of people I think! https://ledvdotbe.wordpress.com/
    Be well!

Hi Louise! Thank you! That’s so kind! Your blog looks great, too! Beautiful and informative! I’m adding it to my blogroll! 🙂

I work in Brussels, and amazingly enough, two of my colleagues are also vegan. Thanks to your list of vegan-friendly places in Brussels, we now have more options to check out if we want to go out after work sometime! 😀

    Hello!
You know what’s fun and great?
My two children and I are on your picture of the Loving Hut express!
You can see my son Raphaël looking in your direction and my daugther Aline is in the infant carriers. It’s great for us to see a picture like this!
I became vegetarian in 2007 and we are vegan since 2013.
    Have a nice day!

Ha! What a cool coincidence! The other two people in the picture (the woman in the blue jacket and the boy in the red sweatshirt) are my sister and nephew!

      It’s a small (vegan) world. 🙂

    Yes, it’s a funny coincidence!
Maybe we will meet one day again at the Loving Hut express!
I know that it has to move and that it is now near the central station but I don’t know wich day and schedule it is.

They’re just across from the Cathedral on Mondays (not sure the hours) and the owner told me recently that they got a new food truck and might be at another location in Brussels on another day of the week.

Mr. Vegan Stuff in Belgium is my partner. Our kitty (actually, his kitty, but she welcomed me nicely into the family) is Mrs. Fuzzbutt “Poes” Heidegger. She’s not a vegan kitty, so she eats a store-bought kibble created for indoor kitties. (I can’t remember the brand.)

Keep up the good work !! 😉

I have found the schedule on his facebook page. It’s a new food truck indeed. A smaller one. My children and I went in the new location on monday of the previous week. But I think it’s the only day the Loving Huts express is in Brussels.

I just found your blog a couple of minutes ago and already need to thank you for making it and all the effort you put into it, and into being vegan. I’ve been trying to be vegan for the longest time now but never felt like Belgium offered as many options as America does, so I kind of put it aside (I am vegetarian though). Living cruelty free is something very close to my heart, so not being vegan makes me feel incredibly guilty. You definitely opened my eyes and showed me that being vegan doesn’t have to be that hard! A thousand times thank you, I hope you like living in Belgium and keep up the good work!

Hi Asja! Thank you so much for your sweet comment! It’s so great to know that my blog is helping people to find vegan options they didn’t know were there! Hang in there. Once you get your routines down and know what products you like, it gets a lot easier!

P.S. I do like living in Belgium. 🙂

I see that there hasn’t been a comment for over a year, so I con’t know if this blog is still active or not, but I thought I would give it a shout! I am an American living in the USA currently. I just returned from living in the DRCongo for a year and a half. While there a new grocery store opened – a highlight – that was owned by a man who’s grand father had moved to Lubumbashi from Belgium. We loved this new grocery store because although things were expensive, most items came from Europe (mostly Belguim of course!). We discovered these wraps and thought we had died and gone to heaven! When the supply came every few months, these wraps would fly off the shelves – mostly because of us!! When it was time to move back to the States, I filled my suitcase with several packages! I brought them home and put them in the freezer and we have been rationing them since we returned last July. I got excited when I googled the wraps looking for a place I could buy them here in the states. I found this site and the exact picture of the package, but no information on where I could buy them here in the USA (Arizona). Does anyone have any suggestions! I do love them and was even more excited to find out that they are vegan!! But, as much as I love the wraps, they are not worth going back to the Congo for!!

Hi! I haven been silently following this blog for a long time and I thought it had been abandoned. Since I just noticed that you have published several articles in the last months, I think it’s time to drop you a note and thank you for your efforts! I am Belgian but I live in Finland, where veganism is much more common and vegan food (accidentally or not) is often available in supermarkets. When I come back to Belgium for holidays in a family of meat-eaters, though, it’s a completely different business and I often have trouble feeding myself with anything more interesting than vegetables and beans. Your blog is exactly the help I need to prepare my trips (when it will be possible to safely travel again). I wanted to let you know that you have at least one very thankful reader!

Hi, Nathalie! Thank you so much for your kind comment! ❤ It makes me happy to know my blog has been helpful to you! Here’s hoping we’ll be able to safely travel again this year and you’ll have a chance to try some of the vegan goodies available here! I didn’t know Finland was so much more vegan friendly. That puts another destination on my travel wish list! 🙂

My favorite are the accidentally vegan products because they are really hard to find here.
    Greetings from Brussels 🙂
