One thing I got asked a lot when I first went vegan is “What do you put on your bread?” People have a hard time fathoming what you could eat on bread besides meat and cheese. “Hummus” was one answer. “Peanut butter” another. And then there are these: Tartex Pâtés. Like the Tofutti slices I posted about earlier this week, these are an old school vegan product, but unlike them, these have stood the test of time and it’s hard to find a better vegan pâté out there.
I’m a fan of the simple “Delikatess” which is their most basic flavor, but I also really like the slightly spicy “Mexicana”. In addition to being a nice bread spread, I really like this as a snack or appetizer on little toasts with pickles and pearl onions.
Tartex Pâtés are mainly available at health food stores.
