De Vegetarische Slager is a Dutch company based in Den Haag that makes various vegetarian meat products based on soy and lupine. Unfortunately, many of their products contain egg and/or dairy, but a number of items are totally vegan (and marked as such), including these unbelievably realistic chicken pieces.
Seriously. These things are so realistic that they almost creep me out. When you open the package, the smell of chicken wafts up at you and it’s hard not to double check that you did indeed buy something labeled “vegan”. If you’re someone who’s easily turned off by meat analogues that are too similar to meat, these may not be for you. But if that doesn’t bother you, these are really quite good. And I truly believe that this is one of the few items out there that would fool meat eaters into thinking they were eating the real thing. (Not that you want to fool anyone, just that you might be able to convince them that vegan meats can actually come close to the taste they’re used to.)
These are great browned in the pan, or stir-fried. They freeze quite well, and I’ve even thrown them in the pan without thawing first and they come out perfectly. They’re a bit pricey, so I usually keep them as a treat or use them for a special occasion.
In Belgium, these are primarily available at the Delhaize.
